The Premier League transfer window has closed, but two of Chelsea’s biggest earners have faced dramatically different fates.
Ben Chilwell is set to leave Stamford Bridge permanently, with Fabrizio Romano confirming that the defender has agreed a two-year deal with Strasbourg. The move comes after Chelsea ruled out another loan, having already filled their quota with the French club. Chilwell is expected to replace Ishé Samuels-Smith, who joined Strasbourg earlier this summer but is now bound for a loan spell at Swansea.
In contrast, Raheem Sterling finds himself stuck in limbo. The England international, who spent last season on loan at Arsenal, was widely expected to secure a move away. However, no late deals materialised despite interest from several London clubs, including Fulham.
Sterling remains Chelsea’s highest earner on wages of over £300,000-a-week, a factor that is proving to be a stumbling block for potential suitors. With Chelsea’s overseas loan quota set to be filled — particularly if Nicolas Jackson completes his move to Bayern Munich — any deal for Sterling will need to be permanent.
What’s Next for Sterling?
Options remain abroad, with the Turkish transfer window open until September 12 and Saudi Arabian clubs able to sign players until September 16. However, Sterling is not believed to be enthusiastic about either route, leaving his future uncertain.
