Liverpool’s deadline-day swoop for Marc Guéhi has sensationally collapsed, with the defender now expected to remain at Crystal Palace despite having reportedly completed his medical and agreed personal terms.
The England international looked set for a £35m switch to Anfield, with Palace initially accepting Liverpool’s offer. Guéhi was even understood to have passed his medical on Merseyside, only for the move to fall apart late in the window.
Palace’s Replacement Move Falls Through
The deal hinged on Palace securing a replacement, but their pursuit of Brighton defender Igor Jesus collapsed amid late rival interest from West Ham United. The Times first reported the breakdown, while The Athletic revealed Guéhi had even held discussions with manager Oliver Glasner regarding his future before a final decision was made.
Although Palace signed French teenager Jaydee Canvot for £23m, his lack of top-flight experience meant the club were unwilling to lose their defensive leader.
Glasner and Parish Hold Firm
Glasner, who recently praised Guéhi after his stunning strike in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa, publicly dismissed speculation with a defiant statement:
“There is no deal.”
Club chairman Steve Parish has also admitted Palace are under financial strain, but the board ultimately decided keeping Guéhi outweighed short-term gain — even if it risks losing him on a free when his contract expires in 2026.
What It Means for Liverpool
For Liverpool, the collapse represents a major setback as they sought defensive reinforcements before the deadline. The Reds had earmarked Guéhi as a long-term successor to bolster their backline, but will now need to reassess options ahead of the January window.
