Viktor Gyökeres scored his first Arsenal goal as the Gunners closed out their preseason with a convincing 3–0 victory over Athletic Club at Emirates Stadium. Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were also on the scoresheet in a performance that will boost confidence ahead of the Premier League opener away to Manchester United next week.
First Half: Gyökeres Makes His Mark
The game started with intensity as Athletic Club pressed high, forcing Arsenal into a few early mistakes while trying to play out from the back. Viktor Gyökeres was in the thick of the action from the opening minutes, drawing a yellow card from Yuri Berchiche after being fouled in a dangerous area.
Despite some sloppy moments, Arsenal began to find rhythm in possession. The breakthrough came in the 34th minute when Declan Rice’s in-swinging delivery reached Bukayo Saka at the far post. The winger cleverly recycled the ball to Martin Zubimendi, whose pinpoint cross found Gyökeres. The Swedish striker rose highest to head home past Unai Simon, marking his first goal in Arsenal colours.
Just two minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead. A lightning-quick counter saw Saka break free and slot past the keeper with composure, giving the Gunners a comfortable 2–0 advantage heading into halftime.
Second Half: Havertz Adds the Finishing Touch
Mikel Arteta introduced Noni Madueke and Ben White after the break, with Timber shifting flanks to accommodate the changes. Madueke, hugging the right touchline, added a different attacking dimension, whipping in dangerous crosses and through balls — a contrast to Arsenal’s usual inside-forward style.
Kai Havertz, brought on later, made his presence felt almost immediately. Latching onto a well-timed pass, the German forward slotted home the third goal of the afternoon, continuing his push to earn a starting striker spot for the season opener.
Summer signing Cristhian Mosquera impressed with a composed defensive cameo, while Arsenal’s control of possession ensured there were no late scares.
A light-hearted penalty shootout closed the day, which Arsenal also won — sending fans home with smiles and optimism.
