Liverpool boss Arne Slot has revealed that new £29.5 million arrival Jeremie Frimpong could step in as a temporary replacement for Mohamed Salah during the Egyptian star’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The 24-year-old right-back, signed from Bayer Leverkusen earlier this summer, was initially brought in to reinforce the defence after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure. But Slot has now confirmed that Frimpong’s versatility was a major factor in the signing, as he can operate both at right-back and as a right winger.
Salah Set to Miss Key Fixtures
Salah is expected to miss up to six games in December and January if Egypt progress deep into the AFCON tournament, which begins on December 21, 2025.
The matches he could miss include high-profile Premier League clashes against Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves, Leeds United, Fulham, and potentially a decisive game against Arsenal.
For a Liverpool side heavily reliant on Salah’s goals and creativity, losing him during the busiest period of the season could be a significant blow. Slot, however, believes Frimpong can fill the gap.
“We definitely thought about that,” Slot explained. “We brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back, but I also think and feel he can play as a right winger.
Signing Jeremie Frimpong was for multiple reasons, but one of them was also that he could replace Mo if Mo is not there.”
Frimpong’s Role Beyond Defence
Frimpong is renowned for his blistering pace, dribbling, and attacking instincts — attributes that could make him a dangerous option on the wing. During his time at Bayer Leverkusen under Xabi Alonso, he often played high up the pitch, contributing goals and assists despite being listed as a defender.
Slot’s comments suggest that Liverpool will experiment with Frimpong in advanced positions before AFCON begins. This would give him time to adapt to Salah’s role and ensure Liverpool’s attacking rhythm remains intact when the Egyptian departs for international duty.
Other Options for Salah’s Role
While Frimpong is a key candidate to cover Salah, Slot has hinted that he has other options in mind. Players like Luis Díaz, Harvey Elliott, and even young talents from the academy could see increased minutes on the right wing. However, Frimpong’s unique skill set offers a different dimension — especially in games where Liverpool need width, speed, and directness.
Why This Move Makes Sense
Slot’s tactical flexibility means having players who can operate in multiple positions is a priority. In modern football, covering for star players during international tournaments has become an essential part of squad planning. Frimpong’s signing not only strengthens the defence but also gives Liverpool an attacking wildcard.
If Frimpong adapts quickly, his spell as Salah’s stand-in could even shape his long-term role at the club. For now, Liverpool fans can expect to see him used both in defence and attack as the season unfolds.
